Powder Bed Fusion – Laser Beam / Metal

Laser-based powder bed process for layer-by-layer production of highly complex metal components. (Brand names such as SLM or DMLS historically belong to this family.)

Operating Principle & Process Flow

Operating Principle: A laser beam locally melts fine metal powder in a powder bed. After each layer the build platform lowers and a new powder layer is applied.

Process Flow: Powder spreading → Layer exposure (melting) by laser → Platform lowering → Repeat → Depowdering → Separation from build plate → Post-processing.

Technical Specifications

  • Energy Source: Laser beam (typically fibre laser Yb:YAG; blue/green wavelengths for copper).
  • Feedstock / Material Feed: Powder bed (coater / recoating system).
  • Typical Part Size: Micro parts up to medium-sized components (typically up to 400×400×400 mm; large systems up to 1000 mm).
  • Build Rate: Low to medium (~10–150 cm³/h depending on number of lasers).
  • Accuracy: Very high (typically ±0.02–0.05 mm).
  • Surface Quality: Good (Ra 5–15 µm), but often requires post-machining for functional fits.

Applications & Materials

Typical Materials: Stainless steel, aluminium, titanium, nickel superalloys (Inconel), tool steel, cobalt-chromium, copper.

Typical Applications: Aerospace components, medical implants, tooling with conformal cooling.

Industries: Aerospace, medical technology, automotive, tooling.
